Look and see what I am saying
A SMALL book, but perfectly formed - and with an impact far outweighing its size.

It's all about deaf awareness, with each page featuring a short universal message about deafness,
deaf people, deaf community and deaf culture. And Mills really does mean a positive 'deaf', not
'hearing-impaired', because that pc description focuses on what someone can't do - and deaf people
can do anything but hear.

Each message is accompanied by an image of deaf and mainstream Indian culture taken when Mills,
a renowned visual theatre director, was delivering an Arts and Culture Development project in the south
of the country.

The pictures by Steven Wellman and the British Council are full of feeling and the advisory messages
to guide those of us with hearing when we meet deaf people certainly make you think, especially
the 'please do' and 'please don't' sections.

Mills, who is deaf since birth and fluent in both spoken English and British Sign Language, has done a
super job in bridging a gap that we can all help to make a lot narrower. And if you're lucky enough
to meet her, DON'T SHOUT!

December 23rd 2006 Book review by David Graham, Manchester Evening News, M.E.N

This beautifully presented Deaf Awareness book contains striking colour photographs of Deaf and
mainstream Indian Culture.  Each photograph is accompanied by universal messages, written in plain
English, about deafness, deaf people, the Deaf Community and Deaf Culture. This educational book is
ideal for hearing people involved with the D/deaf community. It is also a positive and visual treat for deaf
people.

This is a book which will be of interest to a wide audience - adults and children. The high quality photos
will immediately engage anyone who picks up the book, while the short texts will encourage everyone to
think about the messages and perhaps find out more information about deafness and the Deaf community.

LOOK AT ME … is a visually impressive and informative work which focuses on viewing those that lack
the ability to hear with respect.  Reminding the reader that deaf people possess the same capabilities for
success as anybody else, the author conveys a positive message.  Although not vast in volume, the work
is significant in content … Lisa Mills’ ability to educate the reader in a positive manner could further
enhance the appeal of this work.
